The first painter of the Tang Dynasty in China. He was from Wannian County, Yongzhou (Xian). His father, Yan Pi, and his brother, Yan Litoku, were also famous painters. His brother, Litoku (?-656), held the ranks of Chief Robe Master, Master Painter, and Minister of Works, and was active in producing clothing and furnishings for the imperial court, as well as building mausoleums, palaces, roads, and bridges. Ritsubon followed in his brother's footsteps, and after serving as Master Painter and Minister of Works, he became Zhongshu Ling (Prime Minister) during the reign of Emperor Gaozong. Ritsubon is said to have studied the painting techniques of Zheng Fashi and Zhang Sengyao, and formed a family of painters, but his lines were thin and neither thick nor thin, and were said to have been powerful and fast. He was skilled in portrait painting, and his works "Eighteen Scholars of the Qin Dynasty," "Meritorious Officials in the Lingyan Pavilion," and "Foreign Envoys" were all highly praised. Works said to be Yan Li's include "Scroll of Emperors" at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and "Palanquin" at the Palace Museum in Beijing, but there is no definite proof.
