Japanese: 忠臣蔵物 - ちゅうしんぐらもの

(1) A general term for Kabuki and Ningyo-joruri plays based on the tale of the revenge of the Ako Roshi. The term "Chushingura" comes from the title of the representative work, Kanadehon Chushingura. "Kura" refers to Oishi Kuranosuke's storehouse, and many of the works have "Iroha" or "kana" in the title, referring to the number of 47 Ronin. The sword attack and seppuku of Asano Takumi-no-kami Naganori, lord of Ako Castle in Banshu, in 1701 (Genroku 14), and the attack on the Ako Roshi in 1702 attracted the interest of the jianghu, and a great number of plays based on these stories have filled the stages of Kabuki and Ningyo-joruri.
