It was founded in 1958 based on the Asian Writers' Conference, which was held in New Delhi in 1956 with Prime Minister Nehru and others as its initiators. The first conference was held in Tashkent, in the Uzbek Republic of the Soviet Union (now the Republic of Uzbekistan), in October of the same year, with approximately 200 people from 37 countries participating. Since then, conferences have been held in Cairo (1962), Beirut (1967), New Delhi (1970), Alma Ata (now Almaty, 1973), and Luanda (1979). The secretariat is now in Beirut, having previously held conferences in Colombo and Cairo. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
