1881‐1959 A leader of the Menshevik Party during the Russian Revolution. Born into an old Georgian family, he studied law at Moscow University. He joined the student movement while at school and later joined a Menshevik organization. He played an active role as a central figure in the Menshevik Party's parliamentary group in the Second Duma after the 1905 revolution. He was arrested in 1907 and exiled to Irkutsk, where he learned of World War I. Together with other exiles, he organized a bipartisan group that was not aligned with Plekhanov's ideology of defending the homeland, nor with Lenin's ideology of defeatism.
