A leader of the Menshevik Party during the Russian Revolution. Born into an old Georgian family, he studied law at Moscow University. He joined the student movement while at school and later joined a Menshevik organization. He played an active role as a central figure in the Menshevik Party's parliamentary group in the Second Duma after the 1905 revolution. He was arrested in 1907 and exiled to Irkutsk, where he learned of World War I. Together with other exiles, he organized a bipartisan group that was not aligned with Plekhanov's ideology of defending the homeland, nor with Lenin's ideology of defeatism.

ロシア革命期のメンシェビキ党の指導者。グルジアの旧家に生まれ，モスクワ大学で法学を学ぶ。在学中に学生運動に加わり，後にメンシェビキ系の組織に入る。1905年の革命後の第2国会ではメンシェビキ党議員団の中心人物として活躍。07年に逮捕され，流刑先のイルクーツクで第1次世界大戦を知るが，ここで他の流刑囚とともに，プレハーノフらの祖国防衛主義にも，レーニンの敗戦主義にもくみさない超党派グループを組織した。
