This site is located in Kakuriyama, Kawakami-cho, Kagoshima City. Pre-Pottery and early Jomon period ruins and a medieval mountain castle are stacked on top of each other with layers of volcanic ash between them. It is located 7km north of Kagoshima City, on a tongue-shaped plateau with a height of 80m overlooking a tributary of the Kotsuki River. Excavations by the Kagoshima Prefectural Board of Education in 1975 and 1976 uncovered three sections of medieval castle ruins on the top of the plateau measuring 70m east to west and 150m north to south, and below that, early Jomon period ruins with 17 pit dwellings, numerous pits and stone collection remains were discovered. There are five layers of intermediate layers below the Jomon period ruins, and below that, 38 groups of stone tools including microliths, large stone dish-shaped processing tables and stone hammers were found all over the plateau.
