Writer and theater critic. Born in Tokyo. His father was the Gidayu (gidayu) Takemoto Miyakodayu. He graduated from the French Literature Department of Hosei University. In 1939 (Showa 14), he joined the Miyako Shimbun (now the Tokyo Shimbun) and worked as an entertainment reporter. In 1946, he wrote "My View of Rakugo" for the magazine "Kuraku," which was well received. In 1947, he became the theater critic for the Yomiuri Shimbun, writing reviews and essays on kabuki, bunraku, rakugo, and more. He also wrote novels and plays, and in 1964 won the Naoki Prize for "Kodan Honmokutei." He was known for his clear and frank way of speaking, typical of a Tokyoite born in Asakusa.
