This refers to a state in which emotions cannot be controlled, and so the slightest stimulus can cause a person to suddenly cry, laugh, or become angry. This condition often appears in people with cerebral arteriosclerosis. This condition is often seen in post-stroke patients when they are asked to recount old stories. It is a characteristic symptom of cerebrovascular disorders such as cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction. In cases of brain trauma or atrophic changes in the brain due to aging, a milder emotional change state called emotional instability often occurs than emotional incontinence.
