…In the first half of the 16th century, the eldest son of the House of Nassau, Hendrick (Henrich) III, inherited the lands on the left bank of the Rhine, including the Netherlands, served the Habsburgs, and acquired the Duchy of Orange in southern France through marriage. His second son, William (William), acquired the lands on the right bank of the Rhine, i.e. the Nassau lands. William's son, William I (1533-84), inherited his father's lands, and in 1544, when his uncle Hendrick III's son René died, he inherited all the lands of the Nassau lands and became the founder of the House of Orange-Nassau. …
