An archipelago on the Pacific coast south of Chiloe Island in southern Chile, South America, with a rugged coastline, just like the Taitao Peninsula to the south. Benjamin Island and Guaytecas Island are relatively large, but most of the islands are small, and there are more than 1,000 of them in total. Almost no vegetation grows there, and only a small number of indigenous people (chonos) live there (Alacaluf). The port of Melinka on Guaytecas Island is the only settlement.
