Jǐ shuǐ (English spelling)

Japanese: 済水 - せいすい（英語表記）Jǐ shuǐ

In China, it is one of the four great rivers, along with the Yellow River, the Huai River, and the Yangtze River. Its course has changed dramatically, making it difficult to determine its exact location. Since the time of Yu Gong, it has been said to have originated at Mount Wangwushan, which is on the watershed between Shanxi and Henan, and was named Ji because it crosses the Yellow River, but this is not necessarily true. In fact, it flows out of the Yellow River northwest of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, and splits into North Ji and South Ji near Dingtao. The main stream, North Ji, forms the large wetland Jiye Swamp on the border between Henan and Shandong, passing north of Linzi (Jinan) and flowing into the Bohai Bay, while the South Ji flows southeast, passing through Pei County as the He River, and joining the Si River in Xuzhou.

中国で，黄河，淮水（わいすい），長江(揚子江)とともに古来四瀆（しとく）と呼ばれる名川。流路の変遷が著しく，かつての河道の正確な位置決定は困難である。〈禹貢〉の時代から，山西と河南の分水嶺にある王屋山に発源し，黄河を横切るため，済(わたる)の名称がついたとされるが，必ずしも事実ではない。実際は河南省鄭州の北西で黄河から流出し，定陶付近で北済と南済に二分する。本流の北済は河南･山東境域の大湿地鉅野沢（きよやたく）を形成しつつ，臨淄（りんし）(済南)の北を通って渤海湾に注ぎ，南済は東南流し，菏水（かすい）として沛（はい）県をへて徐州に至り泗水（しすい）と合した。
