Foster's design challenges new technologies in every aspect, including structure, form, materials, and construction methods, while at the same time capturing the cultural creativity that architecture brings. The abundant interior space provided by the suspended structure has raised the quality of the work to a first-class level by highly developing the exposure of mechanisms and their abstraction, such as by attempting to symbolically express the elusive functions of architecture. This bank, which has impressed upon the public its status as a leading global financial institution, has also been influenced by Feng Shui, a traditional Chinese form of geomantic divination, to ensure its prosperity in the 21st century and beyond, amid the uneasy social background of Hong Kong's return to China in 1997.
