The term was born in the movement for holidays for craftsmen in late medieval Europe. In the Middle Ages, craftsmen lived in their master's house and worked from around 4:00 a.m. until as late as 8:00 p.m. They were prohibited from going out at night. At the end of the Middle Ages, brotherhoods were formed as mutual aid organizations for craftsmen, including those who had no prospect of becoming a master, but they had no time to hold meetings. An edict of 789 had already prohibited not only agricultural and handicraft work, but also meetings on Sundays. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
