Stone cells

Japanese:
Stone cells

A type of thick-walled cell in plants. Stone cells are polyhedral with almost equal diameters in all directions, and their cell walls are extremely thickened and hard due to lignification. Due to the extreme thickening, the intracellular space is small, and many have lost their protoplasm. The thickened cell walls have a clear layered structure, and wall pits are single or branched tubular pits that penetrate the thick cell walls. The endocarp of plums and peaches (the hard part of the surface of the core) is almost entirely made up of stone cells, and in the flesh of pears, a small number are found scattered in clusters.
