The daily newspaper with the largest circulation in Korea. Its English name is Chosun Ilbo. It was first published in March 1920 and has the longest history in Korea. Under Japanese colonial rule, it was subject to strict surveillance and crackdown by the authorities due to its anti-Japanese movement and public enlightenment. In 1940, the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War forced the newspaper to close, and it was suspended four times and confiscated 500 times in the 20 years until it was forced to close by the Government General of Korea. After being revived in 1945, it was suspended for four months due to the Korean War, but since 1960 it has developed in earnest with a significant expansion of its facilities and the enrichment and expansion of its reporting. It has a wide range of support from right-wing and conservative groups. It has a large number of regular readers due to its solid articles, but also has a wealth of information on Korean entertainment and showbiz. In 2001, it was the first Korean newspaper to open a Japanese website, and is popular for its wealth of information. It has a circulation of 1.84 million copies (2009, Korea ABC Association).
