Its official name is the Academy of Sciences of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and it is the central institute for scientific research in the Republic, directly subordinate to the Executive Yuan (corresponding to the Cabinet). Founded in 1952, it initially consisted of eight research institutes, including those for physics and mathematics, engineering, chemistry, economics and law, history, language and literature, and archaeology and folklore (all of which are located in Pyongyang, except for the chemistry institute at the Hamhung branch). However, natural science institutes were successively established or split up. In 1964, the social science and humanities institute was separated and made independent as the Academy of Social Sciences. In addition to the Academy Bulletin, it publishes magazines in various fields and numerous academic books. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
