IISS is a private research institute established in London in 1958 to study international security issues in the nuclear age. It is characterized by its membership system, with researchers invited from over 60 countries around the world on a rotating basis. The results of individual studies are published in a pamphlet called the Adelphi Papers , and in the bimonthly journal Survival . Providing information is also an important part of the institute's activities, and its annual publications, the Military Balance and Strategic Survey , are considered to be among the most authoritative sources on the world's armaments and military situation. It also hosts an annual conference and various seminars, providing a forum for security experts from around the world to exchange ideas.
