A former town in Yuri County in southern Akita Prefecture. Occupying the eastern foot of Mt. Chokai, the town produces rice and livestock, as well as tobacco leaves, fruit trees, and vegetables. The town's center is Fushimi. There are five power plants upstream of the Koyoshi River. In March 2005, the town merged with Honjo City and the towns of Yajima, Iwaki, Yuri, Nishime, Higashiyuri, and Ouchi in Yuri County to form Yurihonjo City. Area: 322.53 km2 . 秋田県南部,由利郡の旧町。鳥海山の東山麓を占め,稲作,畜産を行うほか,葉タバコ,果樹,野菜も産する。町の中心は伏見。子吉(こよし)川上流に5発電所がある。2005年3月本荘市,由利郡矢島町,岩城町,由利町,西目町,東由利町,大内町と合併し市制,由利本荘市となる。322.53km2。6967人(2003)。
