Thuringia (English spelling)

Japanese: チューリンゲン(英語表記)Thüringen
Thuringia (English spelling)
A historical region name in Germany. Located in the center of Germany, it stretches from the Bela River in the east to the Saale River in the west, from the mountainous region of the Thuringian Forest in the north to the foothills of the Harz Mountains in the south. It includes cities such as Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, and Jena. The name comes from the Thuringians, a Germanic tribe. In the 9th century, Charles I (the Great) established the County of Mark as a line of defense against the Slavs. In the late Middle Ages, it became part of the Duchy of Saxony of the Wettin family, but since the 16th century, it has been divided into several small principalities through inheritance. Some of these continued to exist in the German Confederation and the Second Empire. After World War II, it became a Soviet occupation zone, and then became part of East Germany. Since 1952, it has been divided into the provinces of Erfurt, Suhl, Gera, and Leipzig. It is also important in cultural history, having produced such figures as M. Luther and Bach, and Saxony-Weimar being a center of classical literature.
