Chukchi Sea

Japanese: チュコート海 - チュコートかい（英語表記）Chukchi Sea

The area of the Arctic Ocean bounded by the eastern edge of the Russian Federation and the western edge of the North American continent. In Russian it is called Chukotskoe More, and to the south it is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the Bering Strait. It is about 595,000 km2 in area, and its deepest point is 1,256 m. Most of the coast is mountainous, with cliffs that reach the sea, but in some places lagoons and sandbars have developed. Wrangel Island is located on the ocean. The surface water temperature is 4 to 12°C in summer and -1.6 to -1.8°C in winter, and floating ice can be seen on the surface at all times except for a short period in summer.

北極海のうち，ロシア連邦東端と北アメリカ大陸西端に囲まれる海域。ロシア語ではChukotskoe moreといい，南はベーリング海峡によって太平洋と通じている。広さ約59万5000km2，最深点は1256m。海岸の大半は山がちで崖が海にせまるが，場所によっては潟湖や砂州が発達する。洋上にウランゲリ島がある。表面水温は夏4～12℃，冬には－1.6～－1.8℃で，表面には夏のわずかな期間を除けばつねに浮氷をみる。
