This medium-sized fern grows on rocks, and its Japanese name is derived from this (illustration). Denda is also called renda, and is one of the old names for ferns. The stems are short, obliquely upward or upright, and the leaves grow in clusters. The petiole is 5-10 cm long and has small scales and hairs along the central axis. There is a joint at the apex of the petiole, and the leaf detaches from this point and falls off in autumn. The leaf is 15-40 cm long, has a linear lanceolate blade, and is simply pinnately compound. The pinnae spread out at right angles, are oblong, and have ear-like protrusions at the upper base. There is hair on the upper and lower surfaces, and hairy scales on the underside.
