The basic salt 2PbCO3.Pb (OH) 2 is known commercially as white lead and is well known, so this substance is sometimes referred to as lead carbonate, but it should more correctly be called lead hydroxide carbonate(II). Lead carbonate is a normal salt. It occurs naturally as cerussite. It is a colorless crystal obtained when ammonium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate is added to a cold aqueous solution of lead(II) salt. When heated, it decomposes into lead(II) oxide and carbon dioxide. It is sparingly soluble in water. It is soluble in aqueous alkali and citric acid solutions. It can be prepared from hot water or by leaving the aqueous solution to give the basic salt.
