Lead carbonate

The basic salt _2PbCO3.Pb (OH) ₂ is known commercially as white lead and is well known, so this substance is sometimes referred to as lead carbonate, but it should more correctly be called lead hydroxide carbonate(II). Lead carbonate is a normal salt.

It occurs naturally as cerussite. It is a colorless crystal obtained when ammonium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate is added to a cold aqueous solution of lead(II) salt. When heated, it decomposes into lead(II) oxide and carbon dioxide. It is sparingly soluble in water. It is soluble in aqueous alkali and citric acid solutions. It can be prepared from hot water or by leaving the aqueous solution to give the basic salt.

塩基性塩2PbCO₃・Pb(OH)₂が鉛白(えんぱく)とよばれて市販されよく知られているので、炭酸鉛というときこの物質をさすことがあるが、これは炭酸水酸化鉛(Ⅱ)とよぶのが正しい。炭酸鉛というのは正塩のことである。

　天然に白鉛鉱として産出する。鉛(Ⅱ)塩の冷水溶液に炭酸アンモニウムまたは炭酸水素ナトリウムを加えるとき得られる無色の結晶。熱すると酸化鉛(Ⅱ)と二酸化炭素に分解する。水に難溶。アルカリ水溶液、クエン酸水溶液に溶ける。熱水からつくるか、または水溶液を放置すると塩基性塩が得られる。
