Chuka [village] - Chuka

Japanese: 中和[村] - ちゅうか
Chuka [village] - Chuka
A village in Maniwa County, at the northern tip of Okayama Prefecture. Population 809 (1995). It is located on the eastern side of the Hiruzen Plateau, with the southeastern part being dominated by mountainous terrain on the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains. Settlements and farmland are scattered along the valley of the Shimowagawa River, which flows southwest through the center and empties into Lake Yubara, and National Route 313 runs along the river. Agriculture is the main industry, and dairy farming and radish cultivation are popular on the Hiruzen Plateau. The area was once home to tatara ironworks, and the place name Shimokajiya remains. There has been a continuing outflow of population since World War II, but a ski resort has been opened, hot springs have been drilled, and tourism development is also progressing.
