A dynasty in central India. Also known as the Chandela dynasty. It arose in the 10th century in the Bundelkhand region (then known as Jeyaka Bukti) and was subordinate to the Pratihara dynasty, but as the Pratihara dynasty declined, it gained independence at the end of the 10th century and became a powerful dynasty in northern India. Many temples were built by this dynasty in its capital, Khajuraho (old name Khajeeraha), and about 20 temples still remain today. The dynasty reached its height of prosperity in the first half of the 11th century, when the Lakshmana Temple, the Vishvanatha Temple, and the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple were built.
