A stringed instrument of the lute family used mainly in the Andean region of Bolivia, southern Peru, and northern Argentina. It is an Indian-style modification of the guitar brought by the Spaniards, and is an instrument born from the fusion of European and South American cultures. As a result, it is made of a variety of materials and shapes depending on the region and personal preferences. It is about 60 cm long, has a dozen or so frets on a wooden fingerboard, and generally uses an armadillo shell for the body, but there are also flat wooden ones like a guitar. A wooden soundboard with a round sound hole is stretched over this shell. The strings are made of metal or nylon, and while double-stringed ones often have five courses, there are also four-course, single-string, and three-stringed ones. The most common tuning is E 5 -A 4 , with the third course being the octave E 4 and E 5 , and C 5 -G 4 . In Peru, the smaller charango is called chillador, which comes from the Spanish word chillar, meaning "to screech."
