These temple ruins are located in a small basin at an altitude of 3,170m on the eastern slope of the Andes in the northern Peruvian mountains. They are a representative ruin of the Chavin culture, the formative period of the ancient Andean civilization that began around 800 BCE. Within an area of 200m square, buildings are arranged on the west, north, and south sides surrounding a plaza, and numerous stone carvings of stylized animals such as jaguars and strange god-human figures can be seen throughout the site. Inside the main temple there is a complex network of underground passages, in which numerous votive offerings such as ritual pottery have been discovered.
