…A group of mammals in which immature young are born during development and continue to develop by attaching to the nipples of the mother. They are so named because they usually have a brood pouch. They belong to the order Marsupialia of the subclass Metatheria and are also called diuteriate mammals. They are found in Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea (a few in the Solomon Islands, Bismarck Islands, and the Maluku Islands), and South America (one species reaches North America). There are about 271 extant species in 16 families (sometimes 8 families). …
