Shinsei

A monk from the Muromachi period. The founder of the Tendai Shinsei sect. A native of Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). He became a monk at the age of 14 and studied Taimitsu. In 1461 (Kansho 2) at the age of 19, he climbed Mount Hiei and stayed there for over 20 years, studying everything he could. In 1483 (Bunmei 15), he entered Kurodani Seiryuji Temple and performed 60,000 nembutsu recitations as a daily routine. In 1485, he had a dream in which he received Genshin's Ojoyoshu from Dengyo Daishi Saicho, and he became devoted to it. The following year, in 1486, he entered Saikyoji Temple, which had a connection with Genshin, where he praised the unity of precepts and nembutsu, and here he established the foundation of the Tendai Shinsei sect, and worked hard to restore Saikyoji Temple. He also spread the idea of the unity of precepts and Nembutsu throughout Japan, and passed away during a Nembutsu ceremony at Sairenji Temple in Iga (Mie Prefecture) in 1495 (Meio 4). In 1506 (Eisho 3), he was given the title of Enkai Kokushi.
