Moulmein - Moulmein (English spelling)

Mon State capital of Myanmar (Burma). It is a port city on the south bank of the mouth of the Salween River, facing Martabar. Population 395,900 (2003 estimate). It is the center of the complex delta plain formed by the Salween River and the confluence of the Gyang River and the Arakan River. The port is protected from the summer monsoons by Birgyun Island offshore of the mouth of the river, and is important as a hub for marine and inland river transport. In addition to rice and teak, rubber and tea are the main exports. Traditional industries of rice milling, lumber, textiles, and ceramics, as well as modern industries of shipbuilding and brewing, are carried out here. From 1827 to 1852, it grew as the central city of British Burma. After that, a large number of Mon people migrated and settled in the surrounding area, and the surrounding area became a concentrated residential area for Mon people. The railway line that runs south from Bago connects Martaban to Moulmein by ferry, and extends further south to Ye. The Chaitanlan Pagoda and Uzena Pagoda, located on the hilltop, attract many devotees.
