1885‐1943 An Indonesian doctor and nationalist leader. Born in Ambarawa in the north of Central Java, Cipto was the eldest of eleven children. His brothers Gunawan, Darmawan, and Kartono were also known as nationalists. Cipto graduated from the Java Medical School in 1905. He was hostile towards Dutch rule and hated the Javanese aristocracy, calling himself a "son of the poor." At the end of 1912, he formed the East India Party with Dawes Deckel and Suwardi Suryaningrat, but was expelled the following year for a pen scandal.
