Japanese: タマゴケ - たまごけ

A beautiful moss of the family Pycnonotaceae. Widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, it grows in colonies on the soil or rocks in slightly bright and moist places from low mountain areas to high altitudes throughout Japan. The plant is yellow-green, the stem is 4-5 cm tall, and the above-ground part is densely covered with brown rhizoids. The leaves are thin and needle-like, 4-6 mm long, and open widely when wet. The midvein protrudes from the tip of the leaf, and the leaf margins have sharp paired sawtooth edges. Monoecious. Young capsules are green and globular, while older capsules are brown, distorted oval, and have vertical stripes on the surface. Philonotis thwaitesii Mitt., a member of the same family, is widely distributed from East Asia to New Guinea.
