A famous comic character who appears in Shakespeare's comedy "Henry IV" Parts 1 and 2 and "The Merry Wives of Windsor." He really shines in "Henry IV" Part 1. He is a cheerful knight full of vitality, a big-bodied, heavy-drinking braggart, young at heart despite his years, lustful, reckless and cowardly, yet with a light wit and humor that disguises this as courage. He is the embodiment of the free comic spirit unconstrained by convention, and a spokesman for human instinct.
