High-lift device

High-lift device
A device installed on an airplane's wing to increase the lift coefficient so as to reduce the speed during takeoff and landing (→ lift). Reducing the speed of an airplane is important for improving flight safety and shortening runway length, but this requires the use of a wing with a large area relative to its weight. However, as the wing area increases, the high-speed performance deteriorates and the economy of the aircraft as a transport decreases. Therefore, a high-lift device must be devised for a small wing. Trailing edge flaps, which are movable trailing edges of the wing that are pulled backward at low speeds and bent downward at the same time, are the most common and are installed in almost all aircraft (→ flaps). A leading edge slat is a movable leading edge that extends diagonally forward and downward, and a leading edge droop is a simple fold of the leading edge that is simply bent downward. They are installed on many high-performance aircraft and large passenger jets. Some high-lift devices also use the power of a power source to increase lift at low speeds, such as blown flaps, which draw high-pressure air from a propulsion turbine engine and blow it out over the top of a trailing edge flap.
