An old town in Shiso County in western Hyogo Prefecture. Occupying mountainous land upstream the Chikusa River, it is rich in resources such as cedar and cypress, and forestry is thriving. Shiitake mushrooms are also produced here. There is the remains of an ironworks directly managed by the Edo Shogunate, and before the Meiji period the town was known for producing Chikusa iron sand. The Mimuro Plateau at the foot of Mt. Mimuro, which belongs to Hyonosen-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park, is a good place for camping. In April 2005, it merged with Yamazaki Town, Ichinomiya Town, and Haga Town in Shiso County to become a city, Shiso City. Area: 104.57 km2. Population: 4,158 (2003).
