Cavatina (English spelling) cavatina Italian

A solo piece in 18th and 19th century operas and oratorios. Originally derived from recitativo (recitative), it does not have the flashy character of arias and aims for concise expression. Therefore, da capo form (ternary form A-B-A) and flashy coloratura used in arias are not often seen. Examples of this can be seen in Haydn's "The Four Seasons" in oratorios, and in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Weber's "Der Freischütz" in operas. In the 19th century, this name was also used for instrumental pieces with a song-like character, such as the fifth movement of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13.

18、19世紀のオペラやオラトリオ中の独唱曲。本来レチタティーボrecitativo（叙唱）から派生したため、アリアのような華やかな性格はなく、簡潔な表現を目ざしている。したがって、アリアに使われるダ・カーポ形式（A―B―Aの三部形式）や、はでなコロラトゥーラなどはあまりみられない。オラトリオではハイドンの『四季』に、オペラではモーツァルトの『フィガロの結婚』や、ウェーバーの『魔弾の射手』などにこの例がみられる。19世紀には、ベートーベンの弦楽四重奏曲第13番の第5楽章のように、歌謡的性格をもつ器楽曲にもこの名が使われた。
