Richard Cantillon

1697‐1734
Economist. Born in Ireland, he was of Irish descent. In 1716 he went to Paris and was successful in banking, but he fled to London, where he died unexpectedly, after falling under the radar of John Law, the then Chief Financial Officer. His posthumous work, An Inquiry into the Nature of Commerce General, had already influenced economics in both Britain and France by the time of its publication in 1755. He inherited his economic ideas from British economists, especially W. Petty. However, while Petty ultimately dissolved the source of wealth and value from the dualism of land and labor to a single entity of labor, he dissolved it into a single entity of land, which became the ideological source of French Physiocracy.

経済学者。アイルランド生れのアイルランド系イギリス人。1716年パリに赴き銀行業等で成功したが，時の財務総監ジョン･ローににらまれてロンドンに逃れ，そこで不慮の死をとげた。その遺著《商業一般の性質に関する研究》は55年の刊行までにすでに，その草稿によって英仏両国の経済学に影響を与えていた。彼はその経済思想をイギリスの経済学者，とくにW.ペティから受け継いでいる。しかし，ペティが富および価値の源泉を土地と労働の二元から究極的に労働一元に解消したのに対して，彼はそれを土地一元に解消し，ここからむしろフランス重農主義の思想的源流となった。
