Gongju

Located in the center of Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea, this is an old, open area. It has an area of 940.64 square kilometers and a population of 130,223 (2000). It was promoted to a city in 1986. It was merged with Gongju County in 1995. It was one of the capitals of Baekje, and is home to Gongsanseong Fortress, where many ruins from that time remain. The Charyeong Mountains run to the northwest, and the remnant hill of Gyeryongsan Mountain lies to the southeast, but there are many hilly mountains with an elevation of 200 to 300 meters, and the Geum River basin is a developed plain. It became the provincial capital in 1896 when Chungcheongnam-do was established, and flourished as the center of the province until 1927, when the provincial capital was moved to Daejeon City (now Daejeon Metropolitan City). It is an educational city with a thriving business and home textile industry, and is close to famous sites such as the Royal Tomb of Muryeong.
