A device used for phototypesetting. Light passes through a dial and is projected through a lens onto photographic paper or film, one character at a time. By changing lenses with different magnifications, different sizes of characters can be obtained from a single character, and by adding auxiliary lenses, variations such as elongated, flat, and italic characters can be produced. It is also possible to create contours or patterns by printing a pattern continuously. Since this phototypesetting process can be carried out using a computer, it is widely used in publications and other fields.

写真植字に使用される装置。文字盤を透過した光がレンズを通して1字1字印画紙またはフィルム上に投影される機構をもち，倍率の異なるレンズ群を交換することによって，1つの文字から大きさの異なる文字が得られたり，補助レンズを付加することによって，長体，平体，斜体などの変化もつけられるようになっている。また図柄を連続的に印字することによって輪郭とか地紋をつくることもできる。コンピュータを活用して，この写植作業を行うことができるため，出版物などでは広く採用されている。
