Kajiwara Heizohomare no Ishikiri

Kajiwara Heizohomare no Ishikiri

...The core of these works are those that were conceived based on The Tale of the Heike, Japan's greatest historical novel and widely loved by the people. Many of these works focus primarily on the losers and the weak, and poetically depict the heroism of battle and the transience of human life. If we list the major works performed today in the chronological order of the conflict, they include, first, the Joruri play Genji Eboshi Ori and the Tokiwazu sosagoto Onnai Hitome no Sekimori (commonly known as Munekiyo), which are related to the Hogen and Heiji Rebellions. Also, regarding the uprisings of Yoritomo, Yoshitsune, and Yoshinaka, there are the Ningyo Bunraku plays Kiichi Hogen Sanryakumaki and Genpei Nunobikitaki, and the Kabuki plays Kajiwara Heizan Homare no Ishikiri (based on the Ningyo Bunraku play Miura Daisuke Kobaitazuna), Oakinai Hirugakojima, and Nachitaki Kisei Mongaku. Next, there are joruri pieces closely related to the Tale of the Heike, such as "Heike Nyogonoshima," which deals with the conflict between Shunkan and Kiyomori, "Hiragana Seisui-ki," which deals with the final days of Yoshinaka, "Suma-no-miyako-genpei-tsutsuji" and "Ichinotani-no-futaba-gunki," which are related to the Battle of Ichinotani, and "Nasu-yoichi-saikai-zukuri," which deals with the Battle of Yashima. Furthermore, after the downfall of the Heike clan, there are many masterpieces representative of this series, such as "Gosho-zakura Horikawa-no-yatsu," which focuses on the tragic Yoshitsune pursued by his brother Yoritomo, "Funa-Benkei," which is a Kabuki adaptation of Noh, and "Yoshitsune Senbonzakura," which develops the unusual idea that the Heike generals who were supposed to have died in battle were actually still alive.

…In the winter of 1730, it was adapted into a Kabuki play in Osaka. In recent years, only the third act, Ishikiri Kajiwara, has become popular in Kabuki, and it is often performed under titles such as Kajiwara Heizan Homare no Ishikiri, Namotachibana Homare Ishikiri, and Kajiwara Heizan Kobai-kiri. Japanese:
