Tokashiki Island

Japanese: 渡嘉敷島 - とかしきじま

Located about 30km west of Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, this island is the largest of the Kerama Islands. It is the main island of Tokashiki Village, and the entire population lives in two districts, Tokashiki and Aharen. It is the tragic island where the residents committed mass suicide during World War II (see Battle of Okinawa). The National Okinawa Youth Center is located on the former site of a US surface-to-air missile base. There is a regular ferry service between the island and Naha Tomari Port. It belongs to the Kerama Islands National Park, and the surrounding sea area is designated as the Kerama Islands Marine Park District. Area: 15.29 ^km2 . Population: 730 (2000).
