...In the early modern period, there was a performance called "Hatcho-gane" or "Yatsukarakane" in which young men struck eight gongs arranged in a circle, but later they hung eight gongs around their necks and performed a curved strike, while their companions in monk costumes asked for donations. Other performers who struck gongs around their necks included monk costumes who performed singing nembutsu, and pilgrims who performed impromptu flowing ablutions by carrying a bucket of water on their heads.
