Book of Durrow

A large medieval parchment illuminated Gospel manuscript produced around 675. It was believed throughout the Middle Ages to be the work of St. Columba, and in the 10th century it was placed in a reliquary by King Flann of Ireland and passed on to the monastery of Durrow (County Offaly), which was founded by the saint. It measures 24.5 cm by 14.5 cm and has 248 leaves. It is a pure Vulgate Gospel with a preface that includes synopses and letters from St. Jerome, but it is considered to be the first complete Celtic-Saxon Gospel in the illuminated format, beginning with a page of the evangelist's symbols and followed by a large illuminated page.

中世の大型羊皮紙福音書装飾写本。675年ごろ製作。中世を通じて聖コロンバの手になるものと信じられ，10世紀にアイルランド王フランによって聖遺物箱に収められて同聖人の創設になるダロー(オファリー県)の修道院に伝えられた。大きさは24.5cm×14.5cmで，248葉を数える。共観表，聖ヒエロニムスの手紙等を含む前置きをもつ純粋のウルガタ訳福音書であるが，福音書記者の象徴のページで始まり大型装飾ページが続く装飾形式をもつ，最初の完全なケルト･サクソン系の福音書とされる。
