A perennial plant of the Papaveraceae (APG classification: Papaveraceae). Flower stalks grow from tubers 1-2 cm in diameter and reach a height of 10-30 cm. The leaves are 1-2 times trifoliate and compound. Bilaterally symmetrical bluish-purple flowers bloom in racemes from April to May. It grows on forest edges and cultivated land from the northern Chubu region to Hokkaido, and is distributed in the southern Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and the coast of Okhotsk.
