1878‐1966 American astronomer. Born in Nebraska, he studied at the University of California. After graduating from the University of Illinois, he became a professor at the University of Wisconsin, director of Washburn Observatory, and visiting astronomy at Mount Wilson Observatory in 1922. Throughout his life, he worked to improve the practical application of photoelectric photometry as an astronomy tool, and was always in a leading position. He first used selenium resistors and later phototubes, and in 1910 he was the first to discover the second minimum of the variable star Algol, demonstrating the power of photoelectric photometry. He and his students produced precise data, such as the distribution of interstellar matter in the Milky Way from photoelectric photometry of the color index of B-type stars, and the photometry and colorimetry of globular clusters and numerous galaxies, which are highly regarded as basic information about the Milky Way and the universe.
