Azorín (English spelling)
Born: June 8/11, 1874, Monoval, Alicante
[Died] March 2, 1967, Madrid. Spanish essayist, critic, and novelist. His real name was José Martínez Ruiz. He established a simple style of writing, rejecting the overly ornamented style of the 19th century. He also wrote unique plays using surrealist techniques. He promoted the idea of finding the basis for intellectual innovation in Spain's unique soul after the defeat in the Spanish-American War, and clarified the existence and significance of the so-called "Generation of 1898." His depictions of the landscapes, filled with deep affection for the Spanish land and the hearts of the people who live there, are also excellent spiritual histories, and he made a great contribution to encouraging a reevaluation of Spain's classics. His major works include La voluntad (1902), La ruta de Don Quijote (05), Al margen de los clásicos (15), and Una hora de España (24).
