Japanese: アカグツ(赤靴) - アカグツ（英語表記）starry handfish

A marine fish of the family Scutigeridae in the order Anglerfish (illustration). It is found from central Honshu southward, from the East China Sea to the Indian Ocean, and lives on sandy gravel bottoms of the somewhat deep sea. Its head is vertically flattened and disc-shaped, and its trunk and tail are narrow and short. It is also called the red anglerfish because its back is reddish. Strong spines with star-shaped bases are scattered on the back of its head and the sides of its body. It reaches a total length of about 25 cm. It has poor mobility, moving by crawling along the sea floor using its arm-shaped pectoral and pelvic fins.

アンコウ目アカグツ科の海産魚（イラスト）。本州中部以南，東シナ海からインド洋にかけて分布し，やや深海の砂れき底にすむ。頭部は縦扁して円盤状をなし，軀幹（くかん），尾部は幅が狭く短い。背面が赤みを帯びているのでアカアンコウとも呼ばれる。頭部背面および体部側面には星形の基底をもつ強いとげが散在する。全長約25cmに達する。運動性に乏しく，腕のような形をした胸びれと腹びれを用いて海底をはうように移動する。
