〘 noun 〙① A metal nozzle attached to a water pipe. ※Rojo (1919)〈Akutagawa Ryunosuke〉26 "In the middle of the room there were three holes like vases buried in them, and above the holes there were three water taps (jaguchi) ."② A flower arranging tool with a sharp opening like a snake's mouth. ③ One of the masks used in Kyogen. ※Warambegusa (1660) 4 "The jaguchi (jaguchi) are cut in the Iki no ma" [Additional note]① is a word that appeared in the late Meiji period; before that, words such as " dragon 's mouth" and "dragon 's head " were used.

じゃ‐ぐち【蛇口】

〘名〙① 水道管に取りつけてある金属製の口がね。※路上(1919)〈芥川龍之介〉二六「その部屋のまん中には、壺を埋けたやうな穴が三つあって、その又穴の上には、水道栓が蛇口(ジャグチ)を三つ揃へてゐた」② 生け花用具で、蛇の口のように鋭く開いた形のものをいう。③ 狂言で用いる面の一つ。※わらんべ草(1660)四「蛇口(ジャグチ)犠の間にきる」[補注]①は、明治後期になって現われる語で、それ以前は、「龍(たつ)の口」「龍頭(たつがしら)」などが用いられていた。
