Santeria - Antonio Sant'Elia

Santeria - Antonio Sant'Elia

Italian architect. After receiving technical training in Como, he studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and obtained a degree in architecture in Bologna. He returned to Milan and opened an architectural office. At the age of 24, he joined the Futurist movement and published the "Futurist Architectural Manifesto" on July 11, 1914. In 1915, he participated in World War I and was killed in action at Monfalcone the following year. Sant'Elia's architectural philosophy was a reaction against the academicism that dominated the architectural world at the time, a rejection of stylized treatment of architectural details, and the acquisition of structures and spaces that fit modern urban spaces by making full use of the latest technology. Therefore, he left behind almost no actual works, but presented his creative philosophy through "Designs for New Cities" (1914) and many other projects. In these, he predicted the shape of futuristic cities that would become a reality worldwide after World War II, with regard to the relationship between architecture and cities, such as overlapping highways and decentralized integration of transportation.
