1615‐59 The eldest son of Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal Emperor of India. As he grew older, he was entrusted with the governance of Punjab by his father, but he himself remained in the court of Delhi. Although he was designated the heir to the throne, when his father fell ill in 1657, a struggle for the throne arose between Shah Jahan and his three other brothers. In 1658 and 1659, he was defeated by the army of Aurangzeb, the third son, and was finally executed in Delhi. He was the foremost scholar at the court, and was a follower of the Islamic mysticism that had continued since the time of Akbar, and in religious terms he was an eclectic and reconciliatory thinker.
