German poet and orientalist. Belonging to the late Romantic period. He gained fame with his Anthology of German Poems (1814), which includes Sonnets on Armour, a patriotic ode to Napoleon's troops. He studied oriental studies in Heidelberg and other places, and became a university professor with a good command of Arabic and Persian, where he contributed to the translation and introduction of the literature of these countries. He wrote skillfully crafted poems, such as applying the ghazal form of Arabic-Persian poetry to German poetry. [Kanshina Yoshio]

ドイツの詩人，東洋学者。後期ロマン派に属する。愛国主義的立場からナポレオン軍への反抗をうたった〈鎧をつけたソネット〉を含む《ドイツ詩集》(1814)で名を成す。ハイデルベルクなどで東洋学を学び，アラビア語やペルシア語に通じて大学教授となり，これらの国の文学の翻訳紹介に功績をあげた。アラブ･ペルシア詩のガザル詩形をドイツ詩に応用するなど，技巧を凝らした詩を書く。【神品芳夫】
