1788‐1866 German poet and orientalist. Belonging to the late Romantic period. He gained fame with his Anthology of German Poems (1814), which includes Sonnets on Armour, a patriotic ode to Napoleon's troops. He studied oriental studies in Heidelberg and other places, and became a university professor with a good command of Arabic and Persian, where he contributed to the translation and introduction of the literature of these countries.
