...As we went from ancient times to the Middle Ages to the early modern period, the Japanese changed to a more rational understanding of shadow. Finally, we should not forget Junichiro Tanizaki's long essay In Praise of Shadows (1933), in which he reinterpreted shadow as shading, cloudiness, and darkness, and tried to confirm that it was there that traditional Japanese beauty resides.
